Amazon Trail is the highlight of September's Friday Trails
The Amazon is home to the largest tropical rainforest in the world. The total area of the biome is 7 million square kilometers. At the Rio Botanical Garden, in an area cut by the Rio dos Macacos, the so-called “Amazon region” has one of the largest collections in the arboretum, and also includes the lake, the hut and the fisherman's statue. The space is of great historical importance and houses monumental trees and legumes introduced by the naturalist Adolpho Ducke (1876-1959) after numerous trips to the Amazon (1919 to 1928). Ducke was head of the botany section at the Botanical Garden.
The trail is an opportunity to learn more about the Amazonian species present at the JBRJ. The trail will showcase 20 species of plants from the Amazon biome that are cultivated at the JBRJ. These include kapok, pau-mulato, açaizeiro, abricó-de-macaco, among others.
The Friday Trails are free and start at 10 a.m.. There is only an entrance ticket for the arboretum. There is no need to register, just arrive and take part. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or at jbrj.eleventickets.com.
