African Trail is the Highlight of November
In November, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden presents the African Trail, part of the Friday Trails series. The guided walks will take place on Fridays, the 1st, 15th, 22nd and 29th, with a special outing on the 20th, in celebration of Black Awareness Day.
The date brings a reflection on the struggle and resistance of people of African descent in Brazil, as well as honoring the memory of one of the great representatives of black resistance against slavery, the quilombola leader Zumbi dos Palmares.
The African Trail highlights 19 species in the arboretum, including the flamboyant (Delonix regia), native to Madagascar, and the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), native to the West African coast. These plants are of great importance to African peoples and their descendants.
