Escola Nacional de Botânica Tropical
Inaugurated on June 6th, 2001, the National School of Tropical Botany (ENBT) centralizes post-graduate activities, extension, professional training and socio-environmental responsibility of the Research Institute of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro (JBRJ). For this, it counts on a team of educators, researchers and technologists recognized in their respective areas of expertise.
ENBT is headquartered at Solar da Imperatriz, a historic building that once housed the Agricultural Asylum of the Imperial Agriculture Institute (1872), the Forest Museum (1909), and a Botanical Laboratory (1927). In 1973, the building and its surroundings were declared a national heritage site by IPHAN. In order to install the School, the Solar underwent a major restoration, which began in 1998, through a partnership between the Ministry of Environment/JBRJ and Caixa Econômica Federal. The landscaping was done by Burle Marx.
ENBT's Mission is to "transform people in their principles, values, capacities and competencies with a focus on Knowledge and Biodiversity Conservation". The values that guide its actions are: ethics, excellence, academic freedom, meritocracy, passion and ambition, social and environmental responsibility, provision of highly relevant services to society, transparency and use of biodiversity as an agent of social justice.
ENBT's two stricto sensu postgraduate programs have graduated more than 350 masters and doctors since 2005. In addition, thousands of students have passed through its specialization, extension and youth training courses. The Botanical Illustration courses, active since 2002, have certified more than 1500 students and the socio-environmental projects have trained more than 4000 young people.
