International Relations
The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) works in the preparation and promotion of Brazil’s position on intellectual property issues in international forums, including in compliance with the provisions of art. 2 of Law No. 5,648 of December 11, 1970, with the new wording provided by Law No. 9,279 of May 14, 1996. Additionally, it performs its obligation to provide technical support to the Ministry of Economy and other Federal Government institutions in the negotiation of the intellectual property agenda in free trade agreements, always aiming at meeting legal precepts, as provided for in the Brazilian legal system.
Accordingly, INPI has signed a series of instruments of inter-institutional understanding, such as, for example, cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding, which guide its bilateral, regional, and multilateral activities. They provide training to its staff, the exchange of good practices, and the establishment of partnerships with concrete benefits for society, such as stimulating innovation in international partnerships and the greater registration of IP goods, such as trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and geographical indications.
INPI is also committed to facilitating business in the field of industrial property for its users, following international trends for a more active role by the national industrial property institutes. Click here to learn about some of these initiatives.
In addition to the agreements that structure the performance of activities, INPI participates in several multilateral forums for purposes of the Institute’s technical development, as well as to provide contributions for the whole society.
