Basic Guide for Geographical Indication
Overview
A Geographical Indication identifies the origin of a good or service that has certain qualities due to its geographical origin or whose origin is a location known for that good or service.
The protection ensured by a Geographical Indication, in addition to preserving local traditions, may differentiate goods and services, improve the access to the market, and promote regional development, bringing about effects for producers, service providers, and consumers.

Get the documents ready
In order to file a Geographical Indication application, it is necessary to meet certain requirements. These requirements vary depending on who is applying and on the type of Geographical Indication being applied for.
The Geographical Indication may be an “indication of provenance” (IP) or a “denomination of origin” (DO).
