RESEARCH LINES
1 - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SYSTEM AND ITS ROLE IN THE LOCAL, REGIONAL AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT
This line includes studies related to national and international cooperation between different players about the relevance of the intellectual property rights for the local, regional and international socio-economic development, including the study of INPI’s role as the Federal Institution responsible for matters related to intellectual property (IP). Comprehending the intellectual property system is essential to understand its global and local impacts, in which the organization of economic blocs has been leading to the search for harmonization of the entire IP system so it can handle the free circulation of goods and services protected by intellectual property rights. Reflecting on these changes means increasing the knowledge about the entire intellectual property system.
2 - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND SECTORIAL STUDIES
This line aims at promoting studies regarding specific policies involving intellectual property rights and their relevance for the national development and for the innovation system, preparing highly qualified professionals, for the development of applied interdisciplinary researches on the IP assets in order to subsidize the formulation of sectorial policies that enable the development of specific sectors according to the demands created by them, including the assessment of the role of public institutions, such as INPI. Sectorial studies shall be developed for companies and other institutions of the society to use intellectual property rights strategically. However, public policies and other business policies shall be considered taking into account specific sectors, with specific demands and specificities that characterize them.
3 - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SYSTEM AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
The constant enhancement of the intellectual property system, in which assets as invention patents and utility models, integrated circuit topographies, software, among others, become key elements for the technological development. This enhancement is directly linked to the vocational training intended to design an interdisciplinary system, from the enhancement of the institutional processes related to the topic, in which INPI can be highlighted, up to the impact of the assets presented with the socio-economic development. Technological development drives the current world. Companies launch innovations on the market on a day-to-day basis, promoting the progress of technology. However, to generate development, a new technology must be capable of being appropriated by the one that created it. Therefore, intellectual property rights become important elements in this process to ensure properly appropriation and to leverage the development, interdisciplinary research and training of highly qualified human resources to enhance the system are required.
4 - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, SOCIETY AND BRAZILIAN COMPANIES
Assets directly related to the consumer gain emphasis in this line. Aspects related to the distinctiveness of products and services, ornamentation, plastic form, among other essential characteristics for competitiveness require a proper system of appropriation, with constant enhancement of the process of protection and management of assets as trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs and copyrights. Therefore, the purpose of the line is to provide specific studies on the system of appropriation of such assets, including studies directed to the enhancement of institutions operating in the system, such as INPI, and to assess the influence of these assets in the Brazilian society as a whole. Interdisciplinary studies focusing on intellectual property assets and its relationship with innovation, with emphasis on Brazilian companies, are contextualized within this Intellectual Property, society and Brazilian companies’ line. All intellectual property assets are strongly related to the society in general, with an emphasis on the business sector.
