Library of Intellectual Property and Innovation
INPI has a library specialized in Intellectual Property, Innovation and Technology in general, through which it maintains a collection of approximately 16,000 publications, including books, journals, brochures, master's dissertations, doctoral theses and reference works. The Library of Intellectual Property and Innovation Economist Claudio Treiguer, linked to the Academy of Intellectual Property, Innovation and Development, is responsible for registration, storage and dissemination of works prepared by INPI, aiming at the preservation of the institutional memory.
Through the Library, INPI makes available and provides guidance to users in public consultation to electronic databases of scientific and technological literature signed by INPI, as well as other free databases of patents, trademarks and industrial designs. The Library operates as an information unit for the Doctorate and Master's Professional Programs in Intellectual Property and Innovation, registering and disseminating the scientific production of the referred programs, as well as serving other information units in the country and abroad, in compliance with the normative of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and of the Federal Council of Library Science (CFB), with its operating registration (611) with the Regional Council of Library Science – 7th Region.
Goods and services
- Assistance and guidance to the users in researches related to Intellectual Property, in the bibliographic collection, as well as in electronic databases made available for public consultation;
- Exchange with other institutions for borrowings between libraries;
- Use of the Bibliographic Commutation Service (COMUT), aimed at retrieving articles from journals;
- Searches and/or bibliographic researches for INPI's technical staff and external clients;
- Bibliographic surveys on Industrial Property and related areas, using sources contained in the Library and other institutions' collections;
- Consultation of the historical collection of the Revista da Propriedade Industrial (INPI’S Gazette);
- Consultation of free databases in the fields of patents, trademarks and industrial designs;
- Reprography of bibliographic materials edited by INPI;
- Maintains a Service Station for Searches of Non-Patent Literature, serving the demands of the researchers, for purposes of searching and examining patents.
The borrowing of bibliographic materials is exclusive to the servants of the institute and to the students of the INPI Doctorate and Master's Professional Programs, upon the relevant identification with functional badge or student card. A maximum of four publications may be borrowed, which shall be returned within 14 days (books) or 7 days (other materials).
Access to the information systems
The Library provides access to the electronic catalog, which contains all publications registered in its collection and where the following materials can also be consulted:
- Books and brochures;
- Theses and Dissertations in Intellectual Property and Innovation;
- Institutional Memory Collection;
- Technical Memory Collection;
- Journals specialized in Intellectual Property and Innovation in electronic format;
- Periodicals recommended by WIPO regarding PCT rule 34 (minimum documentation for ISA/IPEA)

Please notice: Consultation of the Library catalog is free. However, the services available at the Terminal are exclusive for servants and Doctorate and Master's students, through user login and password, upon registration with the Library.
Databases
At the Library terminals, as well as across the entire INPI network, the Capes Journals Portal is available, a large virtual library that allows electronic access to full texts and abstracts of thousands of technical journals and other types of scientific literature, as in the areas of technology, patents, management, law, economics and several others.
At the institutional level, 91 bibliographic databases with full text, abstracts and patents can be accessed.

Service
The service of the Library is performed upon the filling of the form. The local collection can be searched on INPI’s portal and, in case of interest, bibliographic data (author, title, date, etc.) must be provided for recovery by professionals of the Library.
The borrowing of bibliographic materials is exclusive to the servants of the institute and to the students of the INPI Doctorate and Master's professional programs, upon the relevant identification with functional badge or student card. A maximum of four publications may be borrowed, which shall be returned within 14 days (books) or 7 days (other materials).
The consultation of electronic databases – both scientific and technological as well as patents, trademarks and industrial designs – counts on the guidance of the Library staff and is carried out through public access terminals, located in the Reading Room.
Service – Technical literature search service station
The service serves the researchers and other professional of INPI, considering the need for recovery of technical literature to support the Institute's work.
How to apply?
- Fill out the Technical Literature Search form (click here to download);
- The form can be sent to the following email: biblioteca@inpi.gov.br or directly at the Library;
- Each form shall include only one application for technical literature. Therefore, if it is of interest to apply for two articles from journals, these shall be submitted in two individual forms.
