We are in a new era in astrophysics, in which the study of the cosmos is based on information that comes from space in the form of several messengers.
Gravitational waves and neutrinos came to join electromagnetic radiation and cosmic rays as messengers that carry the astrophysical information we need to build our models of astrophysical objects and phenomena.
With the first detection of gravitational waves on September 14, 2015, the GW150914 event, the astrophysics of gravitational waves was inaugurated, opening a new window for the observation of the Universe. Subsequently, many other black hole/black-hole merger events were detected.
On August 17, 2017, the signal called GW170817 was detected, which was identified as a merger of a binary formed by two neutron stars.
This event inaugurated the multi-messenger astrophysics involving also the messenger of gravitational waves. This is a very crucial example of the relevance of multi-messenger astrophysics.
