Collection preservation tips
The bibliographic collection of INPE is the property of the institution and must be preserved. Users are responsible for both the works they consult and those they borrow from the library.
We list some tips for the correct use of the collection:
- Handle -publications with clean hands.
- Avoid dog-earing on pages.
- Do not expose the material to food, drink or smoking.
-
Do not use pencils, pens or highlighter.
- Do not use paper clips, tape or sticky paper.
- Do not press the spine when reading or copying.
Adhesive tapes turn the paper yellow and may damage the paper; paper clips and staples rust and are difficult to remove. When it is necessary to repair a publication, inform the Library staff about the problem when return it.
Documents are sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. Exposing books to sunlight, rain, or heat damages the preservation of the paper and promotes the development of micro-organisms.
Smoking, drinking, and/or eating are prohibited inside the Library archives. Food and liquids can cause permanent damage to materials. Only water in capped bottles is allowed.
Damage to and loss of materials borrowed from the INPE collection will result in the suspension of borrowing privileges until the borrowed item is replaced.
By following guidelines, you will contribute to extending the lifespan of the Library's collection, thus preserving our institutional heritage.
