FUNAG publishes "History of Brazil in the old maps"
On the occasion of the Bicentennial of Brazilian Independence celebrations, the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation is relaunching a facsimile edition of the work História do Brasil nos velhos mapas [History of Brazil in the old maps], by Jaime Cortesão. Both volumes of this publication result from a historiographic study the Portuguese author began while he was a professor at the Rio Branco Institute, where he taught history of cartography, geography of the Brazilian borders, and mapoeconomy from 1944 to 1950.
In addition to this relaunch, Ambassador Affonso Santos has organized a new volume, gathering maps, treaties and a name dictionary with information on seaman, cartographers and geographers mentioned by Cortesão in his texts.
The three volumes are available in Portuguese free of charge from FUNAG’s digital library .
