FUNAG launches the Scripta Brasiliana Series
With the collection “Dom Antônio Ferreira Viçoso: Correspondência (1823-1875)" [Dom Antônio Ferreira Viçoso: Correspondence (1823-1875)], FUNAG inaugurates the Scripta Brasiliana Series, which aims to disseminate to the Brazilian audience documents from the colonial and imperial periods, most of which are unpublished, in the fields of philosophy, law, theology and social history. The primary documents are placed in the political and social context of each era, in the biography of their authors and in the history of the colleges where they were written, reclaiming the memory of the teaching of philosophy and humanities in Brazil. The project is thus part of efforts to reconstitute the formation of national thought and identity.
Proposed to FUNAG by Dr. Lúcio Álvaro Marques, from UFTM, the series is an inter-institutional initiative, bringing together researchers and professors from UFTM, UFMG, UFSJ, UNIR, UFMA, Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology, UFRGS, PUC-RS, UNIFRA, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Universidad de Granada / Spain, Universities of Lisbon and Coimbra / Portugal, Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya / Peru and Universidad Nacional del Litoral / Argentina. Various research groups will be represented in the initiative.
The subject of the first volume, Antônio Ferreira Viçoso, Bishop of Mariana in Minas Gerais, was born in Portugal in 1787. Ordained a priest and transferred to Brazil, he carried out missionary and administrative activities, as well as intense intellectual work, from writing the journal O Romano to his famous libel "Slavery offended and defended" (1840), in addition to the collection of more than 600 letters now published.
