FUNAG launches “Ingrato fogo amigo” [Thankless friendly fire]
By former Uruguayan Foreign Minister and current Secretary-General of ALADI, Sergio Abreu Bonilla, this book is the result of thorough historical research on Marshall José de Abreu, the Baron of Serro Largo, the author’s great-great-grandfather. A military hero, the Marshal earned, in 1868, a “biographical sketch” written by the young José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, the future Baron of Rio Branco.
The trajectory of the Baron of Serro Largo unfolds within the context of the South American independence processes, the conflicts and diverging paths taken by the Spanish colonies and the Portuguese one. The Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul is the setting in which borders, lands, and rivers were in the heart of all disputes. Monarchs, the military, indigenous people, immigrants, diplomats, and caudillos are the actual participants in wars, independence movements, uprisings, and alliances that shook the ground in South America.
The work is available for free downloading, in Portuguese, from FUNAG’s digital library . The printed version will soon be available in the virtual store .
