Brazilian Navy receives new submarine
The Brazilian Navy received the Riachuelo, the first of a new class of conventional submarines featuring diesel electric propulsion - a milestone in Brazil’s naval history. The vessel advances National Defense by expanding the means available for combat.
The Riachuelo is the first product of the Submarine Development Program (Prosub), a partnership between Brazil and France for the production of four conventional submarines and the first Brazilian submarine with nuclear propulsion.
From this incorporation, the vessel becomes part of the Naval Operations Command of the Brazilian Navy. Due to their ability to hide on the seabed, submarines are considered key to promoting naval deterrence, that is, to showi combat power and intimidate potential aggressors.
The Riachuelo represents the growing strength and development of the Brazilian economy and naval industry. The vessel is derived from the French Scorpène class, and developed from an original project by the Naval Group company, modified and enhanced by Brazilian engineers.
Now in the operational sector of the Navy. The Riachuelo becomes part of the Naval Force and begins protection and defense activities of the Brazilian “Blue Amazon”, enabling a more effective presence of the Navy in the South Atlantic.
