The purpose of World Wildlife Day is to raise awareness of the planet's fauna and flora. Brazil is the country with the greatest biodiversity in the world, with more than 116,839 known animal species and 46,355 known plant species over six terrestrial and three marine biomes.
The date was chosen to allude to the signing of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973. The Convention regulates the trade and exploitation of endangered species to help preserve them.
