'The National Down Syndrome Day is established, celebrated on March 21 of each year.' So says the first article of the Law 14.306/22 sanctioned by the Brazilian government. The date is also observed worldwide and was created by the UN to promote people who were born with this syndrome.
Also, according to the Law, public agencies responsible for coordinating and implementing public policies on Down Syndrome are also responsible for promoting, organizing and publicizing events that value the person with Down Syndrome in society.
It is important to emphasize that Down Syndrome is a natural genetic occurrence caused by an abnormal cell division that results in an extra genetic material in chromosome 21. In Brazil, it is estimated that about 300,000 people have this syndrome.
