The Brazilian Navy's Antarctic Program was launched in 1982, following the international commitments assumed in Brazil’s accession to the Antarctic Treaty. Our country’s presence in the white continent carries major strategic, geopolitical, scientific and environmental meanings.
Brazil’s Comandante Ferraz 4,400 m² modern Antarctic Station is divided into six sectors, including 17 laboratories. About 20 scientific researches on biotechnology, climate, geological and biological oceonography, and epidemiology are currently being carried out in the Station.
Since its creation, 40 years ago, approximately 4,000 members of scientific teams have passed through the Brazilian Station. The Antarctic continent keeps 90% of Earth's ice and 70% of all fresh water. Its ice sheet plays a crucial role in the global climate system.
