The Brazilian Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, led our country’s delegation to the Stockholm+50 meeting. During his speech, the Minister asserted that Brazil adheres to actions and programs towards climate neutrality, with sustainable and profitable solutions for all. The Brazilian delegation in Stockholm also took the opportunity for bilateral meetings with key partners, such as the US delegation, the EU delegation, the Dannish delegation, the Indian delegation, as well as with representatives from Argentina, Uruguai Colombia, and Sweden, the host of the event.
In an important meeting with John Kerry, the US Special Secretary for Climate, opportunities for generating green hydrogen in Brazil for export purposes were discussed. The United States can be a great partner in fighting environmental crime, especially in the Amazon. Addressing the EU Commissioner for the environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius, the Minister stressed that Brazil can be a great energy producer in several categories, boasting a low carbon footprint.
In the bilateral talks with Latin American nations (Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and Colombia), Brazilian environmental programs, such as Recicla+, Foresta+ and the Brazilian carbon market, were presented and ways of working to find common climate solutions were discussed. In the meeting with the host delegation, the experience with Brazilian biofuels powered transports and with Swedish electric powered transports were assessed and the many possibilities for future cooperation in commerce, innovation and new technologies were discussed.
Conversations with the Dannish delegation focused on Denmark's control of cutting edge technology in offshore wind energy and the potential of cooperation with Brazil, a country which holds the potential of installing more than 700GW of wind energy generation plants. With the Indian delegation, the cooperation between the two countries regarding biofuels; the adoption of ethanol as a global commodity; and the need to coordinate developing nations to advance the regulation of a global carbon market were some of the themes that were brought up.
In the bilateral talks with the Minister of the Environment, Yasmine Fouad, from Egypt - where COP27 will take place - the need to create a global carbon market was reinforced.
