The Brazilian government estimates R$ 700 million in investments to develop the fishing industry
The Brazilian government is committed to developing the fishing industry. For that purpose, it has launched a tender for concession of seven public fishing ports for a period of 20 years, nearly totaling an estimated R$ 700 million in investments and operating costs.
Technical studies show that 59,000 artisanal fishermen will benefit from this new project, and the fishery production may reach 54,000 tons per year. The volume of waste reduced may reach 87,500 tons in the 20 years of concession, due to better handling and processing practices.
Another R$ 472 million in added value are expected, thanks to sanitary improvements and R$ 192 million in productivity gains in industrial fishing. In all, the socio-economic benefits of the project amount to almost R$ 1 billion. The auction is scheduled for March 7th.
