Pion-BR1 is the first satellite built by a Brazilian startup. It was launched on January 13 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. It is regarded as a picosatellite because it has a mass of less than 1 kg. It is also called a "PocketQube" due to its distinctive shape.
Pion-BR1 was built by Pion Labs, established in 2019, and formed by four Brazilian students. The project took seven months to develop, and the satellite was named after Brazilian physicist César Lattes, one of the discoverers of the subatomic pion particle.
The objective of the project will be to study long-distance communication capacity, as well as to evaluate the reception and analysis of communication data and subsystem monitoring, measure the internal and external temperature, and battery autonomy.
