Operation Guardians of the Biome reduces deforestation and fires in the Amazon
Operation Guardians of the Biome is a milestone for Brazil. Launched in July 2021, it is an unprecedented interministerial action aimed at combating illegal deforestation and environmental crimes in the biomes of the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal.
The focus of the first stage was the fight against forest fires. In five months of operation, more than 16,500 fire outbreaks were fought, and more than 1,500 fines were imposed, in addition to more than 3,000 preventive actions.
The new modality, launched in March 2022, acts to reduce illegal deforestation in the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Pará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia. The operation also aims to comply with international agreements signed by Brazil at the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26).
