Manuel Tsiwario, a Xavante native, won bronze at the Pan-American and South American Cross Country Championships, competing with athletes from 7 other countries on March 27. At 16, in the under-18 category, Manuel is the first native Brazilian to ever join our Athletics team.
Manuel lives in Indigenous Land, has just over a year of training and never participated in an official competition before. The athlete was introduced by coach Sivirino dos Santos, after Manuel’s victory in a barefoot running competition in his village; 10km in 36'37''
Sivirino also says that Manuel, who had never left his village before, is only now learning Portuguese and discovering a new world. “Common things are all new to him (…)”, explains Sivirino. He had never been to “a building like the hotel in Serra. Everything is new to him".
