The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) presented a project to reduce methane emissions from livestock in the Americas, to be funded with US$100 million.
The Fund has accredited the IICA to implement projects financed by its credit portfolio, which allows the agency to access resources to support climate adaptation and resilience initiatives in agriculture and rural areas.
The IICA announced that the first step of the initiative will be feasibility studies, with an initial contribution of US$1.5 million from the GCF, and will contribute to the development of more efficient production processes and open opportunities for both public and private projects.
This is a reinforcement of the commitment signed by Brazil and 100 other countries during the COP-26. The adhesion to the global commitment of 30% reduction in emissions is voluntary and Brazil already develops several actions that will contribute to this goal.
Among the strategies that are already being used to reduce methane emissions in Brazilian livestock are the genetic improvement of pastures to develop more digestible feed for animals and the genetic improvement of animals, allowing early slaughter and thus reducing emissions.
