The Brazilian government supports urban agriculture in controlled environmentslike community gardens or vertical farms. Located closer to consumers, it eases logistics, preventing food waste and decreasing transport costs.
These technique allow significant increase in productivity, reducing harvest time by up to ten days, thus consuming less nutrients and water. According to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), water savings may reach 95% of current consumption.
In Brasília, there is one of these community gardens that also works as an Environmental Education Center. Children receive classes on agriculture and learn more about fruits and vegetables. The garden also serves snacks and donates products to the community.
