Brazil now has a new legal framework to regulate short-sea shipping (between ports inside Brazilian territory), dubbed "BR do Mar". The new law will stimulate navigation between ports, reduce costs, improve production flow and strengthen the development of the naval industry.
The initiative will improve cargo transportation and increase the quality of cabotage in the country, by expanding from 11% to 30% the participation of this modality of transportation in Brazil's transport matrix and by doubling the fleet available and its capacity in 2022 alone.
Law 14.301/2022 instituting "BR do Mar" was sanctioned by the Federal Government of Brazil in January and will contribute to the rebalance of cargo transportation, the development of cabotage, and the reduction of costs, thus providing greater efficiency to the Brazilian economy.
