The Brazilian government acted promptly to help those in need during the height of the pandemic, and instituted a financial aid program that became the largest of its kind; the Emergency Aid (“Auxílio Emergencial”), which reached 68 million Brazilians.
More than R$ 350 billion were given directly to the population, an amount greater than was in the last decade of Bolsa-Família, the now-extinct assistance program in Brazil.
Keeping this in mind, the government created the new Brasil Aid (“Auxílio Brasil”), which replaces Bolsa-Família with four times the value. Today, 18 million families are already served by the largest income transfer program in the world.
