A Brazilian hero, artistic gymnast Rebeca Andrade came from a very poor background and made her way to becoming the first young Brazilian lady to win a medal in the sport. Rebeca grew into an Olympic champion after winning the gold in the vault final and silver in the all-around.
Another Brazilian highlight is pro surfer Ítalo Ferreira, also from a very modest upbringing, making history by becoming the first men’s Olympic champion in Surfing, which made its debut as an Olympic sport in Tokyo. Ítalo had been the champion of the World Surf League in 2019.
At Tokyo Olympic Games, the 302 athletes who represented Brazil were responsible for our best performance ever; seven gold, six silver, and eight bronze. Of this total, 19 medals were won by athletes sponsored by the Brazilian government through the “Bolsa Atleta” program.
