Competencies
The Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education – CAPES – is a foundation, a branch of the Ministry of Education. It holds as basic responsibility the growth and modernization of post graduate studies (Master´s and Doctorate) in all of the Federation states of the in Brazil.
In 2007, CAPES also became responsible for the qualification of basic education personnel, broadening its role as the main channel of teaching qualification in Brazil and abroad.
CAPES´ activities are grouped in the following guide lines, each of them developed according to a specifically organized set o programs:
- Evaluation of post graduate programs stricto sensu.
- Access and divulgation of scientific production.
- Investments in the qualification of high level resources, both in Brazil.y and abroad.
- Promotion of international scientific cooperation.
- Induction and promotion of initial and continuous qualification of basic education teachers, in the modalities in-person and on-line.
CAPES has been decisive for the success achieved by the national post graduate system, either in the consolidation of present goals or in the future objectives required by epistemological area as society as a whole.
Our evaluation system, constantly improved, is a tool the academic community uses in the search of a pattern of excellence for Master´s and Doctorate qualification in Brazil.
The results of evaluations are the starting point for the elaboration of policies in the post graduate field and the establishment of scholarships, allowances and support in general.
