Area Coordinators
Area Coordinators are consultants nominated for a 3-year period to coordinate, plan and implement activities in their areas at Capes, including those related to the evaluation of graduate programs. These consultants are scholars with recognized experience in graduate teaching and orientation, research and innovation. Eighteen of the 24 members of the CTC-ES (Scientific and Technical Council for Higher Education) are area coordinators pointed by their peers (six for each Science Branch) – 1) Humanities, 2) Life Sciences and 3) Earth Science, Technologies and Multidisciplinary Studies) to deliberate, as last instance, about proposals for new courses and on assigning grades to programs during evaluation period.
Nomination and Selection Process:
The Area Coordinators are chosen from a list of three names prepared by the Superior Council - Conselho Superior. These lists are defined after an extensive consultation of graduate programs, scientific societies and associations.
To learn more about Area Coordinators responsibilities and norms related to their nomination refer to CAPES Ordinance n. 141, 14th of September, 2016 ( Portaria CAPES nº 141, de 14 de setembro de 2016) that regulates the procedures for area coordinators nomination, their responsibilities and assignments.
Each area of evaluation is composed of a Coordinator, an Adjunct Coordinator and an Adjunct Coordinator for Professional Master (MP). This last one has been recently regulated by Resolution nº 003 of October 3rd, 2012, and approved by Capes’ Superior Council. The designation of coordinators for this specific role is a result of the Professional Master growth in the SNPG (National Graduate System) therefore requiring a distinctive approach regarding the establishment of specific committees to evaluate proposals for new courses and on-going programs. Furthermore, in areas which this modality is incipient, the Adjunct Coordinator of MP duties may be related to inductive actions for the establishment of new programs.
