Authorities attend the inauguration ceremony of new commissioners of CADE
On 7 February, the Commissioners Camila Cabral Pires Alves, Carlos Jacques Vieira Gomes, Diogo Thomson de Andrade, and José Levi Mello do Amaral Júnior took office as the four new commissioners of CADE. The event happened before the 223rd ordinary hearing and gathered representantives of public and private institutions, servants of CADE, and the members of the Tribunal of the Brazilian antitrust agency.
Some Brazilian authorities attended the event, such as the president of the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Minister of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes; the Ministers Gilmar Mendes and Dias Toffoli of the STF; the attorney General of Brazil, Paulo Gonet; the Minister of the Office of the Attorney General of Brazil, Jorge Messias; the executive secretary of the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, Manoel Carlos Neto; the Ministers of the Brazilian Superior Court of Justice, Ricardo Villas Bôas Cueva, Benedito Gonçalves, Luiz Alberto Gurgel de Faria, Mauro Campbell Marques, and Geraldo Og Fernandes; the Chief-Minister of the institutional security bureau of the Brazilian presidency, Marcos Antônio Amaro dos Santos; and the President of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Beto Simonetti, among others.
The president of CADE, Alexandre Cordeiro, highlighted the importance of the date for the agency and for the competition defence in Brazil. “The commissioners will be an addition to the best antitrust agency in the Americas and one of the best ones in the world”, he stated. Mr Cordeiro also remembered his arrival at CADE and noted his first impressions of the institution. “I remember when I joined CADE, in 2015, nominated by the former President Dilma Rousseff. I noticed that this place was different. Some characteristics of this institution called my attention: the high technical quality, the excellent work environment, and the respect received from the Brazilian society and the international community”, he highlighted. Finally, the president of CADE wished the new commissioners success. I dare to say that this is going to be one of the best compositions that the Tribunal of CADE will ever have. The agency, the society, the competition, and Brazil will win”, he added.
The Attorney General of Brazil, Paulo Gonet, mentioned his admiration for CADE and wished the new commissioners success. Mr Gonet remembered that he has worked in the institution as Attorney General and ensured that CADE continues to follow a mission that is essential to the country. “I am sure that CADE will continue to follow its mission of regulating what needs to be regulated”, he emphasised.
The former commissioner of CADE, Minister Ricardo Villas Bôas Cueva, also highlighted the role of the institution in the economic defence of the country. “I am happy to see how this agency, which is so important to the economic defence of the country, has been consolidated as one of the main competition authorities and also the most respected ones in the world”, he concluded.
