CADE promotes debate on competition defense within Mercosur
On 11 and 12 May 2015, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense – CADE held the 61st Meeting of the Technical Committee in Competition Defense – CT-05 of Mercosur, in Brasilia. The meeting gathered experts in antitrust policy from the member countries to discuss and share best practices related to the competition defense. The main objective is to facilitate the analysis of merger files involving companies that also operate in countries of the block.
In the first semester of 2015, Brazil holds the Pro-Tempore Presidency of Mercosur. One of its functions in this position is to organize the meetings of the committees in which the country participates within the block. For this purpose, the meeting is organized by the governmental body enrolled in each committee. Thus, the cooperation in the Mercosur is not restricted to high governmental levels, but also encompasses technical cooperation between similar agencies in the respective member countries. The meeting held by CADE in part of this initiative.
The CT-05 activities provide subsidies to the administration of trade policy instruments, including subjects related to competition. The discussed measures are analyzed by the Trade Commission of Mercosur (CCM for its acronym in Portuguese), in charge of applying common trade policies.
