CADE joins events of global antitrust community
A delegation from the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) represented the Brazilian authority in the events of the international antitrust community carried out during the 71st edition of the Antitrust Spring Meeting. The initiative is organised by the American Bar Association (ABA), in Washington, United States.
The ABA Spring Meeting is considered the largest convention of antitrust and consumer law specialists globally. Over 3.3 thousand people, amongst government authorities, lawyers, consultants, academics, judges, economists, and entrepreneurs from 64 countries, registered for the event this year.
The representatives of Brazil were President of CADE Alexandre Cordeiro, Superintendent General Alexandre Barreto, Commissioner Luiz Hoffmann, Assistant Superintendent Diogo Thompson, and other civil servants that integrate the technical staff of the authority.
On 30 March, President Cordeiro participated in the Chairs Showcase, one of the most expected presentations from the ABA Spring Meeting schedule. The discussions were moderated by the Chair of the ABA Antitrust Law Section, Thomas Zych, and were attended by Reiko Aoki (JFTC), Doha Mekki (DOJ), Andy Gavil (Crowell & Moring LPP), Bill Baer (former Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division of the DOJ and former Chair of the Bureau of Competition of the FTC), and Leah Nylen (Bloomberg News).
The panel aimed to provide an in-depth discussion on the main topics and trends of antitrust law according to the view of outstanding professionals in the area.
On the occasion, Mr. Cordeiro and other panellists had the opportunity to discuss how the dynamic of the academic, political, and economic contexts influence antitrust law. They also debated how to reach a consensus in the complex and versatile process of antitrust policy, which involves a wide range of actors: governments, companies, non-profit organisations, academics, etc.
Other participations
On 28 March, the Assistant Superintendent of CADE, Diogo Thompson, participated in the Lex Mundi Panel, which discussed the connection between the labour market and antitrust policy, a subject that has gained notoriety in recent years. Attending the panel was the Chair of the Competition Committee of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Frédéric Jenny.
Commissioner Luiz Hoffmann participated in the Fireside Chat Series of the ABA on 29 March. In a casual chat, the guests addressed topics such as the main trends in antitrust policy for each jurisdiction and the proposal of the FTC to ban non-compete clauses in employment contracts, amongst other relevant issues.
On 30 March, the Superintendent General, Alexandre Barreto, attended a lunch with renowned antitrust specialists from Brazil and Mexico. At the event, Mr. Barreto presented CADE's activities in 2022, its ongoing strategic plans, the internal projects of the Office of the Superintendent General, his expectations, and the challenges for the following year.
In addition, Mr. Cordeiro, Mr. Barreto, and Mr. Hoffmann received an award in the category "Best Soft Law - Economics" during the Antitrust Writing Awards 2023, carried out by the French publisher Concurrences. The working paper "New Developments on Market Definition" was the third initiative of CADE to win an award since 2017.
President Alexandre Cordeiro, at the Antitrust Spring Meeting, recorded an interview for Our Curious Amalgam, the official podcast of the ABA Antitrust Section. In the conversation, the president mentioned the results achieved by CADE over the last decade, his priorities as president for the following years, and other topics.
The events provided an opportunity for interaction between CADE and the national and international private sectors, not only for deepening the premises and practices adopted in each jurisdiction towards a better understanding of the challenges faced but also to contribute to improving working tools.
