CADE hosts representatives of the Chinese antitrust authority
On 10 August, Alexandre Barreto, the Superintendent General of CADE, received representatives of State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the Chinese antitrust authority. The delegation visited the headquarters of the Brazilian antitrust authority in order to learn about CADE's methodology for investigating anticompetitive practices.
Representatives of the two authorities discussed, amongst other topics, about the Brazilian experience in leniency agreements and the needs to strengthen the exchange of experience in the antitrust field. Moreover, they discussed the similarities and differences between the national contexts of each agency. Amongst the similarities is the challenge of tackling anticompetitive conducts in large countries. As for the differences, China has an antitrust authority for every province, in addition to the national antitrust authority.
During the meeting, Alexandre Barreto explained to the representatives of SAMR how CADE operates, while Commissioner Gustavo Augusto described the jurisdictions of the Tribunal of CADE. Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Economist, Ricardo Medeiros, addressed the role of the Department of Economic Studies (DEE) in the investigation and review of mergers and acquisitions.
Other representatives of CADE attended the meeting, such as the Deputy Superintendent General, Fernanda Machado, the head of the Office of the Superintendent General, Lucas Barrios, the Coordinator General of Antitrust Analysis, Felipe Mundim, and the head of the International Unit, Bruna de Queiroz.
China was represented by the CEO of SAMR, TaoYonghua, the CEO of Shanghai's Pudong New Area Administration for Market Regulation, ZhangLi, and the CEOs of the Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation (SHAMR), WangZheng, PanYijun, and LiYingmin, as well as the employee LiYingmin.
