CADE completes 59 years defending competition in Brazil
The Tribunal of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) celebrated the 59-year history of the Brazilian antitrust agency in the hearing of 6 October 2021.
Law 4137/1962 first established CADE as an agency of the Ministry of Justice with jurisdiction to oversee the economic management and accounting system of companies. In June 1994, with the enactment of Law 8884/1994, the agency became an autonomous agency linked to the Ministry of Justice.
In May 2012, the current Brazilian Competition Law (Law 12529/2011) entered into force. It restructured the Brazilian System for the Defence of Competition by establishing the prior review of mergers and reorganizing the structure of CADE, which is now composed of the Administrative Tribunal, the Office of the Superintendent General and the Department of Economic Studies.
For the president of CADE, Mr Alexandre Cordeiro, the agency has always worked to ensure a healthy competitive environment in Brazil, preventing or repressing any antitrust practice and conduct harmful to competition. In his speech, Mr Cordeiro recalled the importance of all collaborators that helped build the history of the agency.
“Our anniversary is an important time to celebrate the achievements that have brought us here. CADE’s goals would not have been achieved without the daily effort of all the current and former collaborators that have made significant contributions to CADE’s history”, he stressed.
Mr Cordeiro took the opportunity to highlight the authority’s commitment to the future by making efforts to ensure continued excellence in the services provided to society.
The CADE Communication Unit prepared a commemorative video to celebrate the date, released at the beginning of the session. Check the video here.
