CADE and STF sign technical cooperation agreement
On 3 April, Alexandre Cordeiro, the president of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), and Luís Roberto Barroso, the president of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), signed a technical cooperation agreement between the public bodies. The document aims to foster communication between CADE and the STF, enabling the exchange of information and documents of the parties’ interest, as well as to fight misinformation and support the development of joint studies on the promotion of competition.
The agreement sets the compliance of a work plan coordinated both by the Department of Economic Studies (DEE/CADE) and the General Secretariat of the Presidency of STF. The agreement lasts for 5 years, which may be extended.
Alexandre Cordeiro highlighted the importance of this initiative to CADE. According to him, the agreement has come at a good time, as it brings a possibility to improve the Brazilian Justice’s efficiency. “Economy is a tool that helps the authorities to make the best decisions, not only by analysing the impact on judicial decisions, but also in public policies for the defendants, in general”, he stated.
Minister Luís Roberto Barroso has also pointed out the importance of the agreement. As Minister Barroso declared, the partnership is extremely relevant to measure the consequences of these initiatives for the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court, both for the economic and the social aspects. “Thus, signing the technical cooperation agreement with CADE will allow an exchange of ideas and the development of joint studies on several topics related to competition defence. If necessary, we can use CADE’s expertise and structure to assess the socioeconomic impact of our decisions and disclose this information”, he said.
Commissioners Camila Pires Alves, Carlos Jacques, Diogo Thomson, Gustavo Augusto, José Levi Melo, and Victor Oliveira Fernandes featured in the ceremony. Lílian Marques, chief-economist of the Department of Economic Studies (DEE), also took part in the meeting.
