CADE and European Commission discuss collaboration on digital market agenda
On 17 March, the president of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), Alexandre Cordeiro, received the executive vice president of the European Commission responsible for digital transformation, Margrethe Vestager. The visit intended to introduce the Brazilian debate about digital platform regulation and discuss actions to intensify the international cooperation between Brazil and the European Union (EU) related to it.
The meeting took place at CADE’s headquarters in Brasília and had the following attendees: the Superintendent-General Alexandre Barreto, CADE’s Commissioner Victor Oliveira, CADE’s Chief Economist Guilherme Resende, the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Brazil, Ignacio Ybáñez, and other members of the European delegation and the Brazilian authority.
During the meeting, in addition to dealing with competition matters related to the technology sector in Brazil and the discussions on the regulation of digital platforms, the parties agreed upon measures to make feasible the closer bilateral cooperation between the EU and Brazil on the digital agenda, including the definition of specific short and medium-term actions.
“CADE is following the national and international discussions on the topic, but it is important to consider the effects of a new regulation. Thus, if it is a law, it has to be effective and clearly defined”, stated CADE’s President Alexandre Cordeiro.
