Brazilian Senate approves appointments for superintendent general and attorney general of CADE
On 19 June, the Brazilian Senate approved the appointments of Alexandre Barreto de Souza for the position of superintendent general and André Luís Macagnan Freire for the position of attorney general of CADE. Both nominees had already been approved in the in-depth review session of the commission for economic matters of the Brazilian Senate (CAE) on 14 May.
In compliance with Articles 6, 12, and 16 of Law 12529/2011, the new superintendent general and attorney general at CADE are appointed to two-year renewable terms.
Alexandre Barreto de Souza is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at the Universidade de Lisboa. He has a master’s degree, a specialisation, and a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Brasília (UnB). Mr Barreto has been working as a civil servant since 1993. He was president of CADE from 2017 to 2021.
André Luís Macagnan Freire has a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of São Paulo (USP) and in Economy from the University of Brasília (UnB). He has been a lawyer at the Office of the Attorney General of Brazil (AGU) since January 2017. Mr Freire was a member of the AGU sector specialised in arbitration, a consultant of the Brazilian Ministry of Planning, Development, and Management, and a Counsel for the National Treasury.
