Brasília hosts the 5th BRICS International Competition Conference
On 9 November, the ministry of Justice and Public Security, Torquato Jardim, and the president of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense – CADE, Alexandre Barreto, did the opening of the 5th BRICS International Competition Conference, in Brasília.
The event organized by CADE gathers authorities and specialists in competition defense from the BRICS countries – Brazil, South Africa, China, India and Russia – and representatives from many other nations.
CADE’s president, Alexandre Barreto, highlighted the relevance of the meeting. “We reached more than 330 registrations, achieving the maximum capacity expected in the beginning. 25 countries and authorities from important international organizations, such as OCDE, WIPO, were represented in the event. I draw attention to the high quality of the debates that will happen during the conference, with the participation of academics from 26 universities and from 11 countries. All the continents of the globe are, somehow, represented here” stated Barreto.
Barreto still remembered the economical and geopolitical importance the BRICS countries. “BRICS importance is ascendig in the worldwide level. Each country is distinguished by its economic, politic and strategic representativeness. One quarter of the terrestrial area and almost half of the world population are on BRICS. In economic terms, the group overcome by large the provisions of the time and the term was created”, affirmed.
The ministry of Justice and Public Security, Torquato Jardim, highlighted CADE’s institutional duty. “The Constitution is extensive at the points that establish the economy’s rules, with complex and very open clauses. This huge CADE’s challenge gives the dimension of this congress’ relevance”, defended.
Conference
Realized for the first time in Brazil, the 5th BRICS International Competition Conference is about important themes related to the countries’ block, like the use of intelligence techniques in the fight against cartels, competition on the digital era, cooperation in the analysis of international mergers, power market and joint work with antitrust authorities, between others.
The events about competition defense on BRICS have started in 2009, in Russia. The goal, since then, is being to debate the sector public politics related to the members.
Since 2009, the even passed thru China (2011), India (2013) and South Africa (2015) and has become one of the major spots for discussions about competition defense regarding countries in development.
