“Coffee with Mediation” discusses conciliation procedures for government bodies
On 1 November, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) hosted the “Café com Mediação” (Coffee with Mediation), a meeting that aims to enhance the understanding of mediation procedures in the Brazilian Government.
The Office of the Attorney General at CADE created the event and explored solutions for conflicts using innovative approaches and sharing experiences. They also suggested strengthening the capacity of government institutions, to meet the demands of the Brazilian society in a collaborative manner.
Gustavo Augusto, commissioner of CADE, Juliana Domingues, attorney general, and Lílian Marques, chief economist, took part in the opening session. Christiana Beyrodt, founder of “Coffee with Mediation”, was also present in the opening session.
According to Mrs. Beyrodt, the mediation is a way to seek more appropriate procedures to resolve conflicts, using a third party to facilitate the communication between the government bodies. Mrs. Domingues explained that prosecution is currently a common practice at the authority, but there is a need to move towards more appropriate procedures to solve disputes. “Our challenge at CADE is to look at other options to absorb innovative procedures and understand what needs to be done, giving promptness to the proceedings”, she stated.
Mr. Augusto mentioned that CADE has made progress on learning about conciliation and negotiation, but it still needs to develop mediation, mainly among firms that must trade with one another. He also stated the need to use a method that is a “solution that respects competition law and economic regulations, as a whole”.
The event also discussed some topics, such as mediation techniques and competition law, the importance of mediation in economic regulation subjects, and mediation as an improvement tool.
