The main points of the Sustainable Airports project
Strengthening the commitment of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) to promote and debate sustainable measures for the future of civil aviation, the results of the 3rd edition of the Sustainable Airports project – a program that seeks to encourage good environmental management practices in airport environments and the recognition of proactive initiatives related to the sustainability of airline operations – were released on March 16, in a webinar on sustainability in airport management. The airports of Salvador (BA), Belém (PA), Montes Claros (MG) and Campo de Marte (SP) were the highlights among the 20 participating airports. For those who want to watch the awards, the event is available on ANAC’s official YouTube channel (clink on the link to acess).
The project, which had its first edition launched in 2019, seeks to encourage debate and reflection on sustainability by measuring the Environmental Performance Index (IDA) of Brazilian airports. The 2021 edition had 32 evaluation criteria, which have differentiated weights according to their importance in relation to the other criteria.
The evaluation is based on criteria that consider airport management in the following environmental topics: electric power, water resources, waste, climate change, local air quality, aircraft noise, and organizational management.
The airports enrolled voluntarily and began competing in groups according to the number of passengers processed annually, following the provisions of the Brazilian Civil Aviation Regulation (RBAC) No. 153. The classification occurred by levels, being: “first class”, for airports with scores higher or equal to the simple average of their group; and “executive class”, for airports with scores lower than the average, being excluded from the classification participants with final scores lower than 25%.
