ICAO ASSEMBLY
Second week of ICAO Assembly is marked by climate cooperation agreement
In the second week of the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) continued its articulation with other countries and organizations to improve the civil aviation panorama, with the highlight being the signing of a historic agreement for the reduction of carbon emissions in international air transport.
The agreement, signed on October 7th, establishes the long-term goal of international aviation being carbon neutral by 2050. In addition, the commitment provides for the implementation of means to assist developing countries in achieving the decarbonization of aviation, through cooperation activities, voluntary technology transfer and access to finance.
On that occasion, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), an ICAO program for the reduction and compensation of CO2 emissions from international flights, was also revised, ensuring the neutral growth of emissions.
In addition, on October 3, ANAC signed with Uruguay a Memorandum of Understanding on AVSEC instituting the Single Security Inspection, with the objective of exempting baggage and passenger inspection in connection processes at Brazilian airports. Uruguay is the first country in Latin America to sign this agreement with Brazil.
Finally, on Thursday, October 6, the Agency signed a letter of intentions for Brazil to join the Africa Initiative Plan (AFI Plan). The plan aims to establish technical cooperation initiatives with Africa on aviation safety issues.
The signing was also attended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Airspace Control (Decea).
