ANAC takes part in technical meeting with the Transportation Security Administration
The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) attended a technical meeting on April 12 and 13 with representatives of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the authority responsible for security aspects against acts of unlawful interference in transportation systems in the United States. The American authority was represented by the manager of the Operational Center in Miami, Julian Persaud, the TSA attaché at the American embassy in Brasília, Tere Fraceschi, and the advisor Gustavo Maciel, among other professionals.
Responsible for evaluating aspects of civil aviation security in airport operations in South American countries that have direct flights to the U.S., the TSA Miami Operations Center team presented findings identified during previous visits to Brazilian airports, in order to align understandings and corrective actions, considering the provisions of Annex 17 of the International Civil Aviation Convention.
In the opportunity, issues related to the Aviation Security Quality Control (AVSEC) performed in Brazil were also addressed, as well as the risk methodology developed and used to plan the inspection activities, thus subsidizing a rich dialogue about best practices applied in both states.
Aviation security in Brazil
ANAC took the opportunity to present to the TSA the work developed in Brazil, especially by the Brazilian Aviation Security Team (BASeT), a forum for debates that has been occurring between various actors involved with the AVSEC theme in the country, as well as the facilitation project called One Stop Security (OSS), which has at its core the possibility of states exempting passengers in international connections in Brazil from new inspections, provided that a recognition process has been implemented to ensure that the security measures taken by the states involved are equivalent.
In 2022, due to the low number of direct flights to the U.S., the north-American authority, together with ANAC officials, visited only the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro/Galeão – Antonio Carlos Jobim (SBGL). The schedule of airport visits for the rest of 2022 will be coordinated between the Civil Aviation Security Branch (GSAC/SIA) and the representatives of the foreign authority.
