ANAC and SAC publish 4th edition of the Action Plan on CO2 emissions reduction from Civil Aviation
In order to contribute to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) efforts to reduce the impact of civil aviation and to meet climate change targets, Brazil has published the 4th edition of the Action Plan on CO2 emissions reduction.
The document is the result of a joint effort between the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Civil Aviation Secretariat (SAC) of the Ministry of Infrastructure (Minfra) and provides a diagnosis of the performance of Brazilian civil aviation in terms of its impact on climate change, as well as proposed actions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
The current edition includes, for the first time, ANAC’s environmentally responsive regulation programs: Sustainable Airports and SustentAr, initiatives that aim to promote the adoption of best environmental practices in airports, airlines and air cab companies.
The initiatives to reduce emissions through operational improvements and market measures, such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Renovabio Program, are also addressed.
The partnership between SAC and ANAC on sustainability issues began in 2013, when the first edition of the action plan was released. Since then, updates occurred in 2016 and 2019, which improved the calculation methodologies and included new initiatives to reduce emissions.

Initiative
The Action Plan is part of an ICAO effort. It is a document updated every three years, containing a kind of working roadmap, through which the states enable the monitoring of efforts to reduce emissions from civil aviation, as well as the achieved and projected results.
The initiative began with Resolution A37-19 (in English) and has been maintained at each assembly of the organization.
