Environment: the 2nd edition of Sustainable Airports project is open
Seeking to encourage the adoption of good environmental management practices in Brazil’s airports, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) has opened the second edition of the “Sustainable Airports” project, in order to continue the evaluation of the maturity in environmental management of Brazilian airports.
The initiative also seeks to give visibility to positive actions to promote sustainability already developed by airports that voluntarily join the project.
In the first edition of the project, held in 2020 with reference to actions taken in 2019, 23 airports signed up and participated in the ranking. Salvador International Airport stood out among the participants.
Ranking Methodology
The methodology for evaluation has criteria that consider the following themes: electric power management, water management, waste management, biodiversity management, local air quality management, climate change management, aircraft noise management, health and welfare management, organizational management, and environmental education.
Based on their compliance with the specific criteria established in the project and supported by airport environmental experts from various government agencies, ANAC will rank the airports according to their level of compliance with the criteria.
In this edition the airports will compete in groups according to the number of passengers processed annually, so that the classification will be independent in each group.
Differently from the first edition of the project, airports will now be classified in levels: “first class” for airports that achieve a score higher than the simple average of their group, and “business class” for those that achieve a score lower than the average. Airports with a final score of less than 25% of the total will be excluded from the calculation.
The airport with the best score will receive the recognition on a date and place to be announced later.
