One of the main concerns of any entity responsible for animal health in a country is to prevent exotic diseases and official control diseases from entering their territory. In Brazil, the Secretariat of Animal and Plant Health (SDA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) is the agency responsible for preventing and combating the introduction of pathogens and animal diseases that may threaten herds, biodiversity and public health.
Among these preventive measures, the control of the imports of live animals, genetic material, and the like stands out. Therefore, importation processes are always preceded by analysis by the Department of Animal Health (DSA/SDA/MAPA), which defines the health requirements to be met so that these animals may enter the country. Within this context, the type of product or species of the animal to be imported, health conditions in the country of origin, import destination and purpose and the general and specific risk management measures adopted by the country of origin are taken into account and may be continued after their arrival in Brazil.
Among measures associated with risk management, quarantine and diagnostic testing in live animals are important parts of most import procedures. Such procedures are always performed in official quarantine stations or facilities accredited in advance by MAPA. In both cases, the locations used for animal isolation must comply with the requirements established by the legislation, which vary according to animal species and may include issues related to the physical facilities, isolation of the area, control of water and food provided to animals and treatment of effluents, etc.
