The Zambian government has granted approval for the importation of non-genetically modified corn from Brazil
Brazil has been informed by Zambia about the decision to allow the importation of non-genetically modified corn from Brazil, intended for both human consumption and industrial purposes.
This measure adopted by Zambia aims to address potential food security risks arising from crop failures in the country due to severe droughts. Varieties of white and yellow corn that are free from genetic modification will be eligible for export.
This marks the second opening of the Zambian market to Brazilian products this year. In February, the health authorities of Zambia authorized the importation of green coffee beans ("Coffea arabica") from Brazil.
With this new market access, Brazilian agribusiness has achieved its 31st international trade opening this year alone. Over the past 16 months, 109 new markets have been opened across 50 countries.
These outcomes are the result of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
