New approvals have been granted for Brazilian poultry plants to export halal chicken meat to Malaysia
The Brazilian government received confirmation from Malaysia's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) regarding the approval of four additional poultry plants for halal chicken meat export. This decision followed a mission and audit conducted by Malaysian officials in Brazil, in October and November of last year.
The newly approved plants are located in the states of Paraná, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio Grande do Sul, respectively. This expansion significantly broadens the scope of Brazilian agribusiness exports in this sector. With these additions, the number of Brazilian poultry plants authorized to export to the Malaysian market increases from three to seven.
This growth reflects the recognition and confidence in the quality of halal chicken meat produced in Brazil. Malaysia is renowned for its rigorous standards of quality and food safety, particularly for halal products, which must adhere to strict preparation practices according to Islamic law.
In 2023, Brazil exported over 13.6 thousand tons of halal chicken meat to Malaysia, totaling around US$ 20 million. With the newly approved plants, there is the potential for this volume to double, further solidifying Brazil's position as one of the main suppliers of halal meat in the international market.
"This advancement is strategic for the Brazilian agricultural sector and demonstrates the country's ability to meet highly demanding markets while maintaining international standards of quality and food safety. The expansion of exports to Malaysia is also expected to boost the local economy, creating more jobs and opportunities in the sector," emphasized Roberto Perosa, Secretary of Trade and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture.
The new approvals are the result of joint efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
