Ministry of Agriculture reaches historic milestone: 200 new markets for Brazilian agriculture in 20 months
On Wednesday (25th), the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) celebrated an unprecedented achievement: gaining access to 200 new international markets in just over 20 months. Since the start of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's third term, about 60 new destinations have been added, expanding the reach of Brazilian agribusiness across every continent.
“We’ve reached the milestone of 200 markets. Brazil is a key global player in food security, energy, and climate,” said Acting President Geraldo Alckmin.
Recent approvals, such as the export of embryos to Russia and mate herb to Angola and South Korea, were crucial in hitting this milestone. According to Mapa's Secretariat of Trade and International Relations, this success aligns with the government’s strategy to expand foreign trade and diversify exports, solidifying Brazil's role as a leader in global agribusiness.
The current figure surpasses the total number of new markets accessed in 2019 (35), 2020 (74), and 2021 (77), which together saw 186 new market accesses in three years. The new record is already nearing the total of 239 markets reached during the previous administration over a four-year period.
“Gaining access to new markets showcases the competitiveness and reliability of Brazil's agricultural sector, recognized in over 200 countries for its high sanitary standards. This global expansion boosts exports, improves the trade balance, and creates jobs and income for rural communities,” emphasized Carlos Fávaro, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock.
So far this year, 122 new markets have been accessed, with nearly every month setting new records. Key achievements include 26 new markets in June (13 countries), 16 in July (9 countries), 15 in May (10 countries), 15 in August, 10 in March (7 countries), 7 in February (6 countries), 9 in January (5 countries), and 5 in April (3 countries). As of this month, 19 new markets have been accessed across 10 destinations.
These markets include not only traditional Brazilian exports like meat and soybeans but also a diverse array of products, such as fish, seeds, gelatin, collagen, eggs, animal by-products, pecans, mate herb, rice, powdered açaí, green coffee, embryos, and livestock semen.
“In the past 20 months, we’ve created, on average, a new commercial opportunity every three days. This milestone reflects the determination and continuous efforts of Minister Fávaro and the entire Mapa team to diversify our export portfolio and expand opportunities for Brazilian agricultural products worldwide,” noted Roberto Perosa, Secretary of Trade and International Relations.
These accomplishments are the result of close collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demonstrating Brazil's commitment to expanding its agricultural exports globally.
