Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock ends may with record of new agricultural market accesses
This May marks a record-breaking month for new global trade agreements for Brazilian agribusiness products. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock's (Mapa) Secretariat of Trade and International Relations, Brazilian agricultural products gained access to 15 new markets in ten different countries.
This achievement surpasses the previous record set in May 2020, which saw eight new markets in five countries. In May of last year, seven new market accesses in seven countries contributed to a historic total of 78 new markets in 39 countries for 2023. During President Lula's third term, there have already been 124 new market accesses in 51 countries.
May is also the best month of this year, outperforming March with ten new market accesses, January with nine, February with seven, and April with five. So far in 2024, there have been 46 commercial expansions in 27 countries. Highlights include exports of fish to South Africa, Australia, and India; poultry to El Salvador and Lesotho; pork to Bhutan; and green coffee to Zambia.
These commercial expansions span all continents: Africa (5) - South Africa, Botswana, Egypt, Lesotho, and Zambia; Asia (12) - Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Philippines, India, Oman, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore, and Turkey; Europe (3) - Great Britain, Belarus, and Russia; Oceania (1) - Australia; and the Americas (6) - Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, the United States, Mexico, and Peru.
"The access to new markets is a testament to the competitiveness and reliability of the Brazilian productive sector, recognized in over 200 countries and territories. This achievement results from the collective effort of many, led by Ministers Carlos Fávaro and Mauro Vieira, and especially our agricultural attachés in bilateral trade negotiations. It's important to note that 65% of market openings during this administration occurred in locations with attachés. And there are many more records to come," emphasized the Secretary of Trade and International Relations, Roberto Perosa.
The expansion of international agricultural markets has been crucial for the growth of Brazilian exports. In the first four months of the year, agribusiness played a pivotal role, accounting for 49.3% of the country's total exports. The sector generated $52.39 billion in revenue in the first quarter, a 3.7% increase compared to the $50.52 billion exported during the same period last year.
These results stem from the joint efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
