BILATERAL MEETING
Minister Fávaro strengthens trade relations with Turkey in bilateral meeting
On Thursday (12), Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, met with Turkey's Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, to strengthen trade relations. This meeting was part of the ministerial discussions held during the G20 Agricultural Working Group (AWG).
Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Turkey began in 1858 with the signing of the Bilateral Treaty of Friendship and Trade. In 2010, the partnership advanced further with the establishment of the Action Plan for the Strategic Partnership, which deepened cooperation in areas like agriculture, science and technology, trade, energy, among others.
“Turkey is a priority for us in strengthening trade relations,” stated Minister Fávaro during the meeting.
In 2023, four Brazilian agricultural products gained market access to Turkey: non-edible gelatin and collagen, egg products, organoleptic viscera for animal feed, and bovine heparin.
Additionally, Brazil announced 11 new diplomatic representations abroad, including agricultural attachés in Turkey. This expansion increases Brazil’s presence among key economic partners and opens more opportunities for the national agricultural sector.
Fávaro reassured Turkey of Brazil's transparency after confirming the first case of Newcastle disease in Anta Gorda, RS, in July 2024. “We handled the case with complete transparency to reassure both our population and importing countries about the strength of our agricultural defense system,” he said. The emergency declaration for the zoonotic disease was lifted in August 2024.
FURTHER BILATERAL TALKS
Minister Fávaro also met with Indonesia's Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, to express gratitude for approving Brazilian companies for live cattle exportation. Brazil’s agribusiness achieved a milestone in 2024 by accessing 100 new agricultural markets, including exporting mate herb to Indonesia.
In 2023, Brazil's agricultural exports to Indonesia exceeded $3.69 billion, with soy and sugar-alcohol products accounting for 74% of the total. In the first seven months of 2024, Brazil exported more than $2.44 billion in agricultural products to Indonesia.
