Minister Fávaro discusses strengthening agricultural cooperation with Angola’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry
During an official visit to Angola, Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), Carlos Fávaro, met with Angola’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Isaac Maria dos Anjos, on Thursday (5) in Luanda to enhance agricultural collaboration between the two nations.
The visit follows discussions initiated during the G20 Summit in November in Rio de Janeiro, where Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Angolan President João Lourenço agreed to deepen ties. The Mapa mission aims to build on this momentum.
Brazil’s Ambassador to Angola, Eugênia Barthelmess, emphasized that the meeting represents a step forward in strengthening agricultural and agribusiness relations between the two countries. She noted that Brazil is the only nation with an agricultural attaché stationed in Luanda, highlighting its commitment to cooperation.
“We recognize significant opportunities here and are pursuing similar initiatives globally. Angola holds great potential that can benefit Brazil,” said Fávaro, underscoring the goal of achieving balanced trade and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.
In addition to boosting Brazilian exports to Angola, discussions included the possibility of importing nitrogen-based fertilizers from Angola.
Minister Isaac dos Anjos presented Angola’s key agricultural projects, such as irrigation development in the Cunene Canal and initiatives in coffee, sugarcane, and ethanol production. He stressed the importance of a long-term partnership with Brazil to modernize Angola’s agricultural sector and increase local food production.
Fávaro shared Brazil’s success story, explaining that 50 years ago, the country was a net food importer. Through investments in technology and innovation, driven by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), Brazil transformed into a global agricultural powerhouse. He also highlighted Brazil’s leadership in biofuel production and expressed willingness to share expertise with Angola.
Joining the Brazilian delegation were Luís Rua, Secretary of Trade and International Relations at Mapa; Silvia Massruhá, President of Embrapa; and Jorge Viana, President of ApexBrasil.
Expanding the Agenda
As part of the visit, Minister Fávaro met with Angola’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, in a courtesy meeting. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening agricultural cooperation between their countries.
